Tao Tax LLC ("tao_tax," "we," "us"), a Wyoming limited liability company, provides software for computing cryptocurrency tax obligations related to the Bittensor network (the "Service"). This policy explains what we collect, why, and your rights. It applies to taotax.io and the tao_tax web application.
We built tao_tax on a deliberately minimal infrastructure stack — a small set of vetted providers listed in Section 5, and nothing else. We do not sell personal data, we do not run advertising, analytics, or ad trackers of any kind, and we do not use your tax data for anything other than preparing your reports.
1. What we collect
Account information. Email address, display name (if your sign-in provider supplies one), and your chosen account type (individual or firm). Sign-in is passwordless — via an emailed magic link or Google sign-in — so we never collect or store a password.
Firm and client records. If you operate a firm account, we store the firm name, the email addresses of team members you invite, and the client records you create (client name, optional email address, reporting timezone) along with contact labels associating names with wallet addresses. You are responsible for having your clients' authorization to submit their information (see the Terms of Service).
Waitlist. If you joined the pre-launch waitlist, we store your email address and, optionally, your intended account type, used only to contact you about the Service.
Wallet and transaction data. Public wallet addresses (coldkeys/hotkeys) you provide, and the on-chain transaction history associated with them, which we retrieve from public blockchain data and third-party indexing services (see Section 5). If you connect exchange accounts or upload exchange CSV files, we store that transaction data as well.
Tax return information. The outputs the Service computes for you — classified transactions, cost basis lots, gain/loss calculations, and generated reports (e.g., Form 8949 data). This is "tax return information" under U.S. Treasury Regulation §301.7216 and receives the protections described in Section 3.
Payment records. The Service accepts payment in cryptocurrency only (currently TAO, or supported assets on Base). For contributions and invoice payments we record the amount, its USD value at time of payment, and — where applicable — the blockchain, transaction hash, and sending address. We do not collect card numbers, bank account details, or any other fiat payment credentials. If we ever offer card payments, they would be handled entirely by a payment processor and this policy would be updated first.
Support and bug reports. Anything you submit through our bug report form or by email, plus optional diagnostic context (app version, page, browser type) if you choose to include it.
Technical logs. Standard server logs (IP address, timestamps, requested pages) retained for security and debugging.
We do not collect: private keys or seed phrases (never provide these to us or anyone), government ID numbers, or precise location data.
2. How we use your data
We use your data to operate the Service: retrieving and classifying your transactions, computing cost basis and gains, generating reports, processing payments, providing support, and securing the platform. We may use aggregate, de-identified technical data (e.g., error rates) to improve the Service.
We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not train machine-learning models on your tax data.
3. Tax return information (IRC §7216)
Federal law (26 U.S.C. §7216 and §6713) restricts how providers of tax preparation software may use or disclose tax return information. We adhere to these rules:
- Your tax return information is used only to prepare, assist in preparing, or provide the reports and calculations you request.
- We do not disclose your tax return information to third parties, and do not use it for solicitation, marketing, or any purpose unrelated to preparing your reports, without your specific, written, affirmative consent in the format required by IRS guidance (Rev. Proc. 2013-14).
- Disclosures may be made without consent only where permitted by Treasury Regulations — for example, pursuant to a court order or as otherwise required by law.
4. Users outside the United States
The Service is designed for United States federal tax reporting and is offered to users in the United States. If you nevertheless access the Service from elsewhere, you understand that your data is processed on servers in the United States. Where EU/UK law applies to you despite the Service's US focus, our processing rests on performance of a contract, legitimate interests (security, abuse prevention), legal obligation, and consent where we ask for it; the rights in Section 7 are available to you, and you may contact us at support@taotax.io with any privacy request.
5. Third parties who process data
We keep this list short by design:
| Provider | Purpose | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Authentication and database hosting | Account emails, all Service data (encrypted at rest) |
| Vercel | Application hosting | Request logs including IP addresses |
| Resend | Transactional email delivery | Email address, sign-in links, message content |
| Sign-in, only if you choose "Continue with Google" | OAuth identity (email, name) | |
| Taostats | Retrieving public on-chain history | Public wallet addresses you provide, and date ranges |
Note that wallet addresses and their transaction histories are public blockchain data; querying them does not disclose your tax return information.
6. Data retention
We retain your account and tax data while your account is active. Because tax records may need to support filed returns, generated reports and their underlying data are retained for seven (7) years after creation unless you request earlier deletion. Server logs are retained for up to 90 days.
If you request deletion (Section 7), we will delete your personal data except where retention is required for our own legal, tax, or accounting obligations (e.g., payment records), in which case we retain only what those obligations require, for as long as they require it. Practical note: once your data is deleted, we cannot regenerate your prior-year reports — export them first.
7. Your rights
You may, at any time: access your data; export your reports (downloadable in-app in PDF/CSV formats); correct inaccurate data; delete your account and data; and object to or restrict certain processing. Client records, wallets, and exchange accounts can be deleted from within the application (deletion cascades to their derived transaction data); for full account deletion, data export beyond in-app downloads, or any other request, email support@taotax.io. We respond within 30 days (or sooner where required by law). We will never discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
8. Security
We maintain a written information security program including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, access controls, and monitoring. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your personal data, we will notify you and applicable regulators as required by law.
9. Cookies
We use only first-party cookies necessary for the Service to function (session authentication and a small UI preference). See our Cookie Notice for the complete list. We do not use third-party, advertising, analytics, or cross-site tracking cookies.
10. Children
The Service is not directed to anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect data from minors.
11. Changes
We will post changes here and update the effective date. For material changes, we will notify you by email or in-app notice before they take effect.
